Hip Hop

Hip hop is also classified as rap music. It is a favourite amongst the urban youth of today. Young Hispanic and African- American men gave birth to the hip hop culture. Hip Hop was originated in New York, USA during the late 1960’s. In the 90’s Notorious BIG and Tupac Shakur gave birth to gangsta rap. Gangsta rap was perceived to promote violence; terrorism and drug use, in a nut shell everythin gangsta like.Today hip hop is ruled by artists like Jay z and Eminem.

R & B

R&B or Rhythm & Blues first manifestation was in the late 40’s and it was originated by African Americans. R & B is a combination of blues, gospel and jazz and is characterized by a strong backbeat and repeated variations on syncopated instrumental phases. Today’s popular R&B artist include Usher, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Gwen Steffani and Christina Aquilera.

Rock

When rock began during the 1950’s it was considered anti traditional and antiauthoritarian. Rock music was not appreciated by parents, educators and basically everyone who was in a position of authority. Rock is generally vocal melody accompanied by bass guitar, electric guitar, drums and often key board instruments like organs, pianos and synthesizers. In the 70’s rock was ruled by pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. 70’s also saw punk rock bands like The Sex Pistols. Kurt Cobain and Nirvana guided rock music through a grungy phase and at the present day there are NU metal bands like Limp Biskit and Linkin Park which are ruling the charts.

House

House was born by dance club Dj’s in Chicago, USA during the mid 80’s. House music is a form of electronic dance music and its beat is produced by a drum machine or electronically by a sampler. Being influenced by the soul and funk music which was very popular in the 70’s, house music is a style of disco music with heavy beats and in its early days it was very popular in all the underground parties.

Reggaeton

It originated in Jamaica in the late 60’s as the music for the Jamaican poor. It has elements of Calypso and R&B. Reggae is based on a rhythm style characterized by regular chops on the off beat known as the skank. In today’s age Daddy Yankee rules the roast when it comes to reggaeton music.

UK Bhangra

As the name suggests UK Bhangra was originated by British Asians. Birmingham till date is the hub for UK Bhangra music. Artists like Juggy D, Jay Sean, Rishi Rich, Punjabi MC and Bombay Rockers have helped internationalize this form of music.

Ambient music was originated by Brian Eno in the mid 70’s. Ambient music refers to environmental music which is soothing to the ear. This form of music is influenced by different styles like jazz, New Age, Electronic or just noise for that matter. Enigma is very popular when it comes to ambient music

Trance

There are various genres of trance music

Euro Trance

It is purely commercial trance and is the easiest forms of trance

Psychedelic Trance

This genre of trance came into the mainstream in the mid 90’s. A favourite in the UK it is often called psy trance. Psychedelic trance is very fast paced compared to other forms of trance.

Ambient Trance

Ambient trance gets you dreaming and is very hypnotic in nature. One will hear this sort of trance in raves and it’s a favourite amongst all the rave goers.

Progressive Trance

Also called deep trance or progressive house this genre of trance impacts your ear and your head. It involves a lot of variations and has moved into deep tribal sounds.

Hard Trance

There is a lot of bass and increased tempo in hard trance.
