Introduction

The Martini once being called "the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet", by H. L. Mencken , has come a long way to become perhaps the most well-known mixed alcoholic beverage. The true origin of the martini is still a mystery! There are various arguments as to who was the original creator of Martini. Many who claim or have been declared to have created the first Martini have differing recipes and names; none of which befit the Martini recipe that exists in the present day. While different opinions still prevail, the modern day Martini is a cocktail made with gin and dry white vermouth, although substituting vodka for gin is now common. An olive, a cocktail onion, or a twist are all passable as a garnish.

By one widely-disseminated notion, Martini is a descendent of Martinez which was created around 1862. This particular drink of the time had 4 parts red, sweet Vermouth to 1 part Gin, garnished with a cherry.

Is it a martini, cocktail or a cosmo?

With the revival in popularity of the martini, the name itself has become a sort of "catch all." Just as all batsmen are not "Sachin Tendulkar," and everyone with a tennis racket is not "Andre Aggasi," not everything that comes in a martini glass is a martini.
According to many pundits, the only true "martini" is made with gin, an optional wash of Dry Vermouth and perhaps, a crisp, green olive (for the more daring sorts). Vodka was not introduced as an option until many years later, and no doubt gained in popularity as a drink of choice by the ever so popular James Bond. How can anyone forget “ Mr. Bond” ordering… “just a martini, shaken not stirred” Some consider that martini made from vodka is called "vodka martini." A Cosmopolitan, Cosmo, or even a Cosmo martini is amongst the feminine versions of this beautiful drink.
A "cocktail" is basically a mixture of some sort of spirits and fruit juice. Pour your cocktail into a chilled martini glass, and it's commonly identified as a type of Cosmo or specialty martini.

Shaken or stirred

Both shaking and stirring cool the liquids involved, and they bring out a certain amount of water to your mix, this is a critical part of a good martini. While Shaking is often said to cause bruising of the liquor, stirring is often said to allow much gentler blending of ingredients in the drink. The primary benefit of shaking over stirring is simply speed. You'll be able to cool more martinis by shaking versus stirring. It is a personal choice but we at mypurplemartini.com believe in “shaking it and not stirring it”.

Temperature

A martini is meant to be enjoyed cold. So before making a martini put your gin, vodka, and your martini glass in the freezer for some time where as your vermouth should always be stored in the refrigerator and not the freezer. Once chilled enjoy the drink with a few ice cubes.
