History of beer

Brewing beer is the most ancient art known to man. Not many know that beer is one of the oldest beverages in the world and the oldest proven records of brewing are about 6,000 years old and refer to the Sumerians.  The earliest known chemical evidence of beer dates to circa 3500–3100 BCE. By the 7th century beer had started being produced and sold by the European monasteries. According to some archeologists beer is as old as bread and some believe that both might be a by product of each other.

How is beer made

Beer is made by brewing. Brewing is fundamentally a natural process. When brewed natural food materials are converted into a pure, pleasing beverage. During brewing starch based material is steeped in water, along with certain enzymes to produce sugar. The sugar is then flavored with hops, fruits and herbs. Once this is done fermentation takes place. During fermentation yeast is used which produces alcohol and other waste products. Malted barley is the most common starch used however even wheat, rice and corn are widely used along with barley.

Types of beer

There are three categories when classifying beer. They are ales, lagers and the remaining beers come under specialty beers.

The main difference between a lager and ale is the type of yeast used in fermentation.

Ales
Ales are usually higher in alcohol and will be noticeable fuller and more complex.

Lagers
Lagers tend to be lighter in color and usually taste drier than ales. They are generally less alcoholic and complex.

Specialty Beers
Specialty beers are either ales, lagers, or a hybrid of the two that will contain other ingredients that cause it to not fit into a true ale or lager style.
